Choosing Your Part of Portugal

Lisbon is where most trips begin, and it earns it. Built across seven hills above the Tagus, it’s a city that works on foot and rewards patience – the Alfama’s medieval streets, the Bairro Alto’s nightlife, the Belem waterfront with its Manueline monastery and custard tart bakery that’s been operating in the same building since 1837. But Lisbon also rewards people who use it as a base rather than a destination: Sintra is forty minutes by train, the Arrabida coastline an hour south, and Evora two hours east. 

Porto is the other pole, and it’s a very different place. Granite and rain, azulejo-tiled church facades, steep streets dropping to the Douro riverfront where the Port wine lodges line the opposite bank in Vila Nova de Gaia. It has the energy of a city that’s been discovered but hasn’t quite adjusted to it yet, which makes it one of the most interesting places in Europe to spend a few days. From Porto, the Douro Valley opens up along the river – narrow terraced vineyards, stone quintas, and one of the world’s great winemaking landscapes. Harvest season here, from mid-September into October, is worth planning a whole trip around. 

South of Lisbon, the Alentejo is the part of Portugal that reminds you what Europe used to feel like. Cork-oak plains stretching to the horizon, whitewashed villages that appear almost by accident, Roman ruins embedded in medieval towns, and a table wine culture – dense, dark, mineral – that rivals anything from better-known regions. Evora is the centrepiece, but the countryside around it is what lingers. The Algarve runs along the southern coast: dramatic limestone cliffs, fishing villages, and some of the Atlantic’s finest beaches, busiest in summer and a different prospect entirely between October and May. 

In between these anchors sit the places that make a Portugal trip genuinely your own: Obidos with its intact medieval walls and literary festival, Coimbra and its Baroque university library, the Minho in the green north where Vinho Verde is made between granite posts in the rain. Most travellers settle on Lisbon, Porto and one or two regions beyond; we help you choose well rather than accumulate miles

When to Visit Portugal

Portugal has gentler extremes than Spain, and that makes it a good year-round destination with some clear peaks. Spring – March through May – is when the Alentejo is at its most extraordinary: wildflowers across the plains, mild temperatures, the cork oaks just leafing, and almost no one else around. May into June is perfect for Lisbon and Porto before the summer heat builds.

September and October are harvest season in the Douro, when the quintas are in full activity and the valley has an energy it only finds once a year. The Algarve is quietest and most itself from October through April, when the cliffs are dramatic and the fishing villages are back to the people who actually live in them. 

One thing Portugal does differently from its neighbours: the Atlantic keeps temperatures reasonable in summer along the coast, and mild in winter almost everywhere. Lisbon rarely feels punishing even in August. We time each itinerary to catch its region at the right moment – and if your dates are fixed, we’ll plan around them.

Portugal is easy to underestimate and surprisingly hard to do well without someone who knows it. The difference between a pleasant trip and a genuinely memorable one is often small: knowing which quinta to choose over which hotel, or why you should spend an extra night in the Alentejo rather than rushing back to Lisbon, or which back road through the Douro has the best views at the right time of day. These aren’t things you find in a travel guide. They come from having been there, repeatedly, with a genuine interest in the result.
